Henry Felch appointed to U.S. Coast Guard Maritime Security Executive Committee

Associate Professor of Cybersecurity to serve on Sector Northern New England Area Maritime Security Executive Steering Committee

AUGUSTA — Henry Felch, associate professor of Cybersecurity at the University of Maine at Augusta, has been appointed by the United States Coast Guard Federal Maritime Security coordinator to a five-year term as a member of the Sector Northern New England Area Maritime Security Executive Steering Committee.

The Executive Steering Committee assists in the development, review, and updating of the Area Maritime Security Plan. The committee works with various stakeholders in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and northeast New York to coordinate and review maritime security, including identifying critical port infrastructure and operations; identifying risks; determining mitigation strategies and implementation methods; and providing advice to Captain of the Port in developing the Area Maritime Security Plan.

“Given his background and experience, Professor Felch will be an excellent addition to the Maritime Security Executive Steering Committee,” said Rebecca Wyke, President of the University of Maine at Augusta. “Henry Felch has been a strong advocate for UMA’s Cybersecurity Program and stresses the importance of training the next generation in this most critical field.”

“I am honored by this appointment and look forward to working with the various stakeholders in reviewing and improving the Maritime Security Plan for the Northern New England Area,” said Associate Professor Felch.

In addition to his responsibilities at UMA as Associate Professor of Cybersecurity, Felch also serves as Director of Maine Cybersecurity Research Lab. He also teaches at Colorado Tech at the undergraduate, masters, and doctorate level.

UMA Associate Professor Henry Felch
Felch served 22 years as an Armor crewman on a M1A1 Abrams tank, stationed in many locations around the U.S., Europe, and Korea until he retired in 2004. During the last two years of his Army career, he was the Director of Information Management (DOIM) Information Assurance division. After retiring, Felch continued to work at Ft Carson in the Information Assurance division and subsequently worked at Verizon business as a systems engineer/ analyst/architect in the Security Solutions Group.

Felch has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Louisville in Training and Development. He also holds a Master of Education from the University of Louisville in Training and Development; a Master of Science in Computer Information Systems from the University of Phoenix; and a Master of Science in Computer Science with a concentration in Computer Systems Security from Colorado Technical University. Felch completed his Doctorate in Computer Science at Colorado Tech with a dissertation in Network Security.
