BANGOR, Maine — The American Heart Association in Maine held its 15th annual Northeastern Maine Heart Ball on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

More than 200 guests attended and $75,000 was raised to support the AHA’s research, education and advocacy necessary to combat cardiovascular disease – Maine’s leading cause of death.  Since its inception, the event has raised over $1 million.

Two local men were honored for having a positive impact on the Bangor area community. Jerry Whalen, Vice President for Business Development at Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, and Thomas Brown, Of Counsel at Eaton Peabody, received Distinguished Service Awards. Brown, a heart transplant recipient of more than 25 years, also served as the 2014 Heart Ball Chair.

Heart Hero speaker Justin Faloon of Old Town moved the crowd with his speech about how, because his life was saved by the Heart Association’s research, that he was able to save three other people’s lives.  He conducted the Open Your Heart appeal which raised $5,000 in personal donations.

The evening began with a cocktail hour intermingled with a silent auction. Guests were entertained during dinner with a live auction and heart-warming stories emceed by WVII 7/Fox 22 Anchors Craig Colson and Lindsey Mills.  The live auction was hosted by WVOM FM’s Ric Tyler.  The night concluded with dancing to Tony Boffa Music presents The Larry Williams Band.
