The Board of Directors of the Hammond Street Senior Center, Inc. has voted unanimously to relocate the Hammond Street Senior Center (the “Center”) from its current location at 2 Hammond Street to a more suitable location in Bangor. The 2 Hammond Street property will be listed for sale. This decision was taken by the Board after careful consideration due to a shortage of parking in the downtown area and the high cost of maintaining a large historic building such as 2 Hammond Street.

The Center was founded in 1999 by John and Elaine Couri of Ridgefield, Connecticut who operated the Center through their charitable foundation-the Couri Foundation-for the next twelve years. In 2011, ownership of the 2 Hammond Street property and all of its assets were transferred to the Hammond Street Senior Center, Inc., a newly-established and locally controlled tax-exempt 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization, which has operated the Center ever since.

The Center provides a broad range of services to individuals 55 and older. It offers members programs in continuing education, fitness, socialization, arts & crafts and special events. Through its relocation, the Center will continue to offer and expand quality programming that will allow seniors to remain vibrant, flourish and to thrive in place. The Board is confident that a new location with ample parking and expanded programming will allow the Center to expand its membership.
