Fort Kent ~ In November, David Hebert, President of local Union 291 at Twin Rivers Paper Company, presented the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund with a memorial donation. Cindy Daigle, Northern Maine Medical Center Chief Financial Officer and Fund Treasurer, was on hand to accept the donation. Hebert said, “We usually donate to a charity when one of our members experiences a loss. So many of us have been touched by cancer, we decided to donate to the Cancer Fund this time.” Hebert, employed at Twin Rivers for twenty two years, said the Union represents a total of seventy six members.
Whether a donation made directly to the Fund, a fundraiser, a business sponsored program or support for an individual dealing with cancer, there are many opportunities in which to contribute to the Fund which has provided nearly one million dollars of assistance since the Fund was founded in 1978. Like so many other businesses, a company called Lula Roe recently held a fundraiser, contributing a portion of its proceeds to the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund. The Affinity Program through TD Bank is a business sponsored program which has supported the Fund for a number of years. Cindy Daigle said, “It is with the generosity of so many groups, individuals and businesses that the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund has been able to provide support in a time when finances should not get in the way of a patient getting treatment.” She said this past year alone, forty families received nearly $88,000 in much needed support for travel and lodging to accompany cancer patients traveling outside the St. John Valley.
Daigle said the Fund Committee is planning a celebration in 2017 when the one million dollar mark is reached. More information about the event will be forthcoming next month.
