SEDGWICK — June 15 marks the third anniversary of the passing of Deborah Greenlaw, a University of Maine alumni member and beloved teacher at the Deer Isle-Stongington Elementary School, who lost her daughter due to a 3-year battle with cancer in 2006. Her daughter, Lacy, was enrolled in the University of Maine at the time of her passing.
In memory of Lacy, her mother established the Lacy Greenlaw Memorial Scholarship Fund, which is in desperate need of funding. While Deborah’s niece and nephew continue to ensure enough funds remain in the account to allow for an annual scholarship award payout, additional funding is needed to allow for accrual and sustainment.
“This is an important cause and was very near and dear to my aunt,” said Lynne Bayley, her niece. Those eligible for the award include sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, who have overcome personal adversity in his/her pursuit of a college education. “I love it when I hear from an annual recipient of the award. It is great to know that it can offer them some type of relief,” said Bayley.
Those who would like to celebrate the memory of Deborah and Lacy Greenlaw are asked to consider contributing to the Lacy Greenlaw Memorial Scholarship Fund. Checks can be made payable to the University of Maine Foundation (annotate in the memo section “Lacy Greenlaw Memorial Scholarship Fund.” Payments can also be made by credit card over the phone by calling 1-800-982-8503.
