ELLSWORTH, Maine — The St. Croix District of the Garden Club Federation of Maine, with sponsorship from NewLand Nursery, Landscaping and Florist, will hold a flower show 2-6 p.m. Friday, August 1, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, August 2, at the Ellsworth Elementary Middle School, 20 Forest Ave. The theme of the show will be “Through the Looking-glass: Adventures in a Garden Wonderland For All Ages.” Admission is $5; children under 12 welcome free of charge.
The show is an effort involving all of the federated garden clubs from Hancock and Washington counties. It will offer a large display of horticulture much like one would see at an old-fashioned agricultural fair. This will include flowering and foliage annuals and perennials, tree and shrub specimens, herbs, vegetables, fruits and container grown plants.
There will also be a design division — a display of 2D and 3D creative work incorporating plant material to suggest various characters and scenes from Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass.
Another division of the show will offer educational talks, workshops, exhibits, displays and booths run by sponsoring and supporting businesses, garden clubs and other non-profits. Tours of the school gardens at the Ellsworth Elementary Middle School will also be available.
The show has been created to appeal to young people as well as adults. There will be an entire section of the show for youth of various ages to participate by bringing horticulture designs and educational exhibits of their own. Special features of the staging will realize various characters and scenes from the books, and there will be activities for children throughout the two-day event. Lemonade and cookies will be available in the Mad Hatter’s Tea Garden.
“Because of the combined efforts of all the St. Croix clubs we are able to offer a show on a scale that has never been seen in this area before, and access to this wonderful school venue has inspired us to make it both fun and educational for kids of all ages,” said Mary Blackstone, show chair.
Participants in the show will be eligible for a wide range of awards and prizes. Individuals interested in entering horticulture in youth or adult categories may bring their entries to the school at the following times: 4-6 p.m. Thursday, July 31, and 7-10 p.m. Friday, August 1. Those interested in entering designs, providing educational exhibits, or participating as commercial sponsors, supporters or vendors should contact Mary Blackstone at 667-8878 or email@example.com by July 15.
