FORMER LILLE CHURCH - The 2014 Levesque family reunion committee invites all former parishionners of Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Catholic church in Lille to join them for the Levesque family Mass in the former Lille church on Sunday, August 17.

ST. JOHN VALLEY – Former parishioners of Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Catholic Church in Lille are invited to the French-language Levesque family Mass held in the former church on Sunday, August 17.

The Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Guy Levesque, originally of Saint-Basile, NB.

The Mass will also feature the renown Saint Bruno Choir of Van Buren.

The Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Catholic church in Lille was closed in 1978 and parishioners were consolidated with those of Saint Gerard parish in Grand Isle.

“For many of us, the church in Lille was an integral part of our lives. The huge wooden structure, the statues lined up in alcoves above the congregation, the windows, benches – everything – is etched in our memories,” said Don Levesque, a Grand Isle native who resides in Saint-Basile, NB, and who is also a Levesque family reunion committee member.

“Since CMA 2014 celebrates our culture, we felt that we should celebrate a Mass in the former Lille church. This Mass will most probably be a once-in-a-lilfetime opportunity for most of us.

“So, we invite all former Lille parishioners to join the Levesque family in celebrating a Mass in French in a very special and historic location,” said Levesque.

Musee culturel du Mont-Carmel curator, Don Cyr, noted, “There has never been an English Mass here. Never!”

Levesque says the family is very proud to continue the tradition of French Masses in the former Lille church.

“Having a local Levesque priest plus the famed Saint Bruno Choir participating is delicious frosting on such a special day,” said Levesque.

The Mass in French will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug.t 17.
Prior to the Mass, Cyr will present an update on the restoration of the former church and the Mass will be followed by an informal visit of the former sacristy.

There will be no collection during the Mass but a donation box will be placed in the rear of the church for those who wish to contribute to the church’s restoration.
