PORTLAND, Maine —  Fisher & Phillips today announced that Phil Moss, a veteran employment law attorney, will be leaving the firm and retiring from the active practice of law at the end of this year.

Born in New Jersey, Moss has lived in the Portland area for the past 27 years, and has nearly 40 years’ experience in labor and employment law.  As of January 1, 2014, he will commence practice as an arbitrator and mediator of labor and employment disputes.

Moss has seen the mix of cases in labor and employment law change significantly since he began practice.  “In 1975, about 70% of my practice involved traditional labor law issues, such as collective bargaining and grievance arbitration, union elections and litigation before the NLRB, and about 30% on wage-hour cases, discrimination claims and OSHA cases. Today, about 70% of my practice involves discrimination claims of one kind or another.”

Moss has extensive experience in arbitration and mediation as an advocate, and is a strong believer in the benefits of these alternatives to traditional civil litigation.

Regional Managing Partner Jonathan Shapiro wished Phil all the best in his new career: “I have worked with Phil for over 20 years.  His commitment to his clients and his thorough understanding of labor and employment law will serve him well as he begins this next chapter in his career.”
