Examples of Bound Resist

Learn about a cloth surface design technique with origins in Asia and Africa and make your own bandana with fiber artist Susan Lehnen. Called Shibori in Japan, Tritik and Plangi in India, and Adire Eleko in Nigeria- the principles of the bound resist method are simple; areas of cloth are tied, folded or stitched and drawn tight, then immersed in dye. When bindings are removed, the reserved areas form a white pattern against the dyed background. Individual experimentation with these methods allows for much innovation and sophistication. It is fun and exciting to see what can happen with bound resist.
