Scholarship to Encourage Students to Pursue Careers in Information Technology

PORTLAND, Maine (June 14, 2012) – Early this year FairPoint Communications donated $1,000 to the University of Maine Foundation for the Maine Telecommunications Users Group (MTUG) scholarship fund.

This year’s 2012 MTUG-FairPoint Information Technology Scholarship was awarded to James Duffy IV from Skowhegan, Maine. Duffy attends the University of Southern Maine and is working towards a Bachelor of Science in computer science. The award was presented at MTUG’s annual conference on May 31 in Portland.

The MTUG scholarship fund targets candidates who are studying in areas relevant to networking, telecommunications, or IT applications. These include students with a focus in business, computer science, and BS and BET students in electrical and computer engineering with a specialization fields such as in networking, telecommunications, broadband, wireless, etc.

“FairPoint is very pleased to join with MTUG to provide a scholarship to a Maine student who is interested in the field of information technology,” said Mike Reed, FairPoint’s Maine state president. “FairPoint has invested more than $279 million in communications infrastructure and technology to bring broadband and information based data services to northern New England. We also believe that investing in education is vitally important and we hope this scholarship will help incent students to explore the field of information technology as a career.”

The scholarship is awarded to students who have completed two years of a four-year bachelors program in a relevant area and is funded annually by companies and organizations that have an interest in developing Maine’s networking, telecommunications, and information technology applications based labor force. The program is a unique model in that MTUG and participating businesses jointly fund the scholarships on an annual basis.

“We thank FairPoint for their 2012 contribution and we look forward to additional businesses supporting this program next year,” said MTUG board member Ron Brown of Ronald O. Brown Consulting. “MTUG is delighted to be partnering with the University of Maine Foundation on this important and unique undertaking. We hope the scholarships will encourage Maine students to pursue this exciting, challenging and rewarding field so important to the competitiveness of Maine businesses.”
