JACKMAN, Maine — Eighth-grader Elise McKendry and high school junior Chandler Bridges were recognized at Forest Hills’ Veteran’s Assembly last week for their accomplishments in writing contests.

Students in grades six-12 were invited to participate in an essay writing contest. For the Patriot’s Pen contest geared to grades six-eight, the theme was “What Patriotism Means to Me”.  For the Voice of Democracy contest for grades nine-12, students had to prepare and present a speech on the theme “Why I’m Optimistic About Our Nation’s Future.”  This is a national contest conducted annually by the VFW.

Locally, the William B. Doughty Ladies Auxiliary No. 5723 of Jackman sponsors the contest and awards the winners a commemorative notepad set, as well as a monetary prize. The winning submissions will be sent along to the district-level to be judged. Grand Prizes include scholarships and trips to Washington, D.C.  National winners are announced in March.
