Green Sneakers-Midcoast Offers Gift Giveaway
To Residents Scheduling Home Energy Evaluations

CONTACT: Nancy Glassman, Coordinator 322-9147

You don’t have to be good to get a gift from the Green Sneakers Project this season! Just be one of the first seven people in the Midcoast area to schedule a FREE home energy walk-thru evaluation and you will receive a packet of gift certificates from Lamey- Wellehan and Reny’s and a 2012 Sunrise Guide with coupons for savings at green businesses that are good until New Year’s Day. The three environmentally conscious businesses support Green Sneakers’ efforts to bring smart energy solutions to homeowners, renters, and landlords. To schedule an energy evaluation, call Green Sneakers at 322-9147.

During the home energy walk-thru, Green Sneakers staff and volunteers identify areas in the home where residents could realize energy savings. They have been trained in the basics to see each house as a system. As they tour the outside perimeter, the heating source, basement or crawl space, a living space, and attic if accessible, they point out to the residents air and heat leaks. If moisture is an issue, they help residents understand the ramifications for the health of the house and its occupants and discuss possible

solutions. They go over the Green Sneakers materials, which include do-it-yourself directions, information on how to proceed with choosing a certified contractor, financing options, and more. And they leave a Green Sneakers decal to help spread the word to friends and neighbors.

Green Sneakers volunteer Larry Beck, principle of the public relations firm, L.K.Beck & Associates, of Rockland, explains why he donates his time to conduct energy walk-thru’s: “I think it’s obvious from recent events that global warming is a tremendous threat. I want to do what I can to alleviate that threat.”

He added: “But whether you agree with my assessment of climate change or not, homeowners can save a lot of money! Every time you make a change to increase your energy efficiency, by insulating a heating duct, or putting in a window insert, you’ll see a measurable drop on your energy bills. There are many ways to tackle the situation. You can do this all at once, or one step at a time, like me, either on your own, or with the professional help of a certified energy advisor.”

Besides the 80-plus home walk-thru’s that Green Sneakers has completed, the local group also has organized four youth programs focused on energy education and community service, house parties showcasing successful retrofits, and public presentations and forums on energy efficiency topics. The grassroots organization collaborates with other local groups, such as Window Dressers, the Island Institute, Midcoast Habitat for Humanity, and the Camden youth program, The RIG, to help residents save energy.

“At Green Sneakers we know that the largest portion of money spent on energy bills flies out of the state, while money spent to weatherize and the realized savings from that work recycle back into the local economy, contributing to job creation,” Nancy Glassman, Green Sneakers coordinator, said.

Green Sneakers is a project of Maine Partners for Cool Communities, whose founding members Sierra Club-Maine, Maine Council of Churches, and Physicians for Social Responsibility-Maine work on a community basis to address global warming and improve air quality.
