BANGOR, Maine — Elm Street Neighborhood will present the fifth annual Family Block Party about noon-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, taking place on Elm Street, between Stillwater and Mount Hope avenue, where the street will be blocked to vehicular traffic.
The party will feature a live band, talent show, streetwide potluck dinner and barbecue, watermelon eating contest, tug of war, water balloon toss, pickleball, bounce house, bicycle parade and a few more surprise events. Donations accepted. This year’s addition to the gathering is a pickleball set purchased with donations from 2013.
The Elm Street Neighborhood annual Family Block Party was started in 2010 to get the neighbors together for some good, summertime fun, when all of the neighborhood kids can play together in the street on a summer day, as some of their parents and other adults did during their childhoods.
Rebecca Croce, president of Elm Street Neighborhood annual Family Block Party as well as the Fruit Street School PTO said in a press release, “Typically shy kids are participating when they might not have been comfortable to do so a couple of years ago and that besides the number of people that attend, the excitement around the event has grown. Our kids were asked once which was better, the block party or Christmas and it was a tough decision. Everyone on the street looks forward to it every year. Even neighbors who have kids in high school still attend and come up with ideas for this once per year event!”
WeeBeez (formally Mt. Hope Variety Store) and General Rental of Old Town have sponsored The Elm Street Neighborhood Annual Family Block Party in the past.
