Young adult author Richard Peck will be at Southwest Harbor Public Library Monday evening, June 23, 7:00pm. This event is sponsored by Island Readers and Writers. Richard Peck has written over 30 books for young readers covering a wide range of topics and genres. The focus of this program will be the importance of historical fiction and the fun of using mice as characters. The evening is called EEK! Mouse Mania in honor of the many great mice books in children’s literature. Remember the valiant Chief Mouse Reepicheep from the Chronicles of Narnia, or bumbling young Matthias from Redwall, or the ever busy mice of Brambly Hedge? How about the Mouse and the Motorcycle and Stuart Little? Junior Bookworms, a group of homeschooled children who meet weekly at the Library, have been reading Peck’s two mouse books, Secrets at Sea and The Mouse with the Question Mark Tail. They have created mouse characters inspired by the mice in Peck’s books; these will be on display during the program. If you love mouse stories this evening is for you! Richard Peck will also explore what it takes to create a convincing mouse character. His books will be for sale after the talk. For more information, call the Library at 244-7065.
