PORTLAND — Mercy Hospital has announced that Nina Edwards, MD, has joined Portland Surgical Associates as a general surgeon. Dr. Edwards has practiced in Maine for the past 12 years, including at Central Maine Medical Center and York Hospital.
“We feel very fortunate to have Dr. Edwards join Mercy,” said Dr. Ben Russell, lead provider at PSA. “As an expert in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, she not only helps deliver the best possible outcomes for our patients, but she does so in a very caring way. She looks forward to continuing to care for her patients in southern and central Maine, and she is excited to meet and provide care to those in greater Portland.”
Dr. Edwards received her medical degree from the Medical College of Ohio and completed her postdoctoral training as chief resident at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. She is a board-certified surgeon who began her career in Michigan before coming to Maine in 2006.
While her path to medicine was not clear at an early age, her fascination with science, particularly biology, sparked her interest in pursuing a career in healthcare. Her clinical rotations inspired her to focus on surgery, which has become a true career passion. Recognizing that the surgical field is ever-changing, Dr. Edwards makes it a priority to stay on top of the latest, cutting edge procedures and techniques.
Colleagues have long known Dr. Edwards for her technical expertise, and patients praise her warm and caring nature. “I love my patients, and I enjoy giving back to my community,” she said when reflecting on her work. Whether it’s participating in national medical conferences or going on mission trips to Haiti, Dr. Edwards enjoys immersing herself in her work and caring for patients.
