Dr. Louisa Barnhart receives a Lifetime Achievment Award from the Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicans on April 28th

Dr. Louisa Barnhart was awarded the Dr. Ulrich B. Jacobsohn Lifetime Achievement Award for “providing and advocating excellent treatment for Maine citizens with psychiatric disorders.” She received this distinguished award at the Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicians’ 11th Annual Spring Program on April 28th in Freeport.

Dr. Barnhart is a psychiatrist whose practice focused on community-based mental health through the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team for many years. She is the Director of the Opioid Clinic at MaineGeneral Counseling in Augusta, and has practiced locally since 2003. Currently Dr. Barnhart is teaching Family Practice Residents Psychiatry and instituting new treatments for treatment resistant depression.

The award was given to her because of her outstanding service to our profession in Maine. She has served in MAPP as the Ethics Rep and for several years on the Board of Licensure in Medicine. She was recognized for her service to her patients as an ACT provider and a compassionate provider of services to substance addicted patients with co-occurring disorders. Finally, for her personal commitment to community service giving her time and energy outside of her professional life to the betterment of her community. Community service includes organizing community quilting, building stoves in Guatemala, and acts as a trustee to China Library.
