Downtown Madness, the annual event recognizing the wide range of national, regional and local guests on the “Downtown with Rich Kimball” radio program, is back for another year. Since the first competition in 2012, hundreds of thousands of votes have come in from every state in the union and over a dozen countries, reflecting the show’s popularity beyond the borders of Maine.
This year’s field includes defending champion Bryan Cranston of “Breaking Bad”, legendary performers Julie Andrews and Carl Reiner, former champ John O’Hurley of “Seinfeld”, Hall of Fame songwriters Jimmy Webb and Alice Cooper, comedians Lewis Black and Christopher Titus, actors Stephen Tobolowsky, Curtis Armstrong, Karen Allen and Bruce Campbell, and Maine natives Katie Aselton of “Legion” and Timothy Simons of “Veep”.
The Maine Bracket features Bill Green of WCSH-TV as the top seed and includes reporters Jessica Gagne, Tim Throckmorton, Jon Alba, Pat Callaghan, Mike Lowe and Sharon Rose Vaznis, as well as Mighty John Marshall, Danny Cashman of The Nite Show and Down East Magazine food editor Joe Ricchio.
Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns is the top seed in the National Bracket, which includes NBC News reporter and author Katy Tur, Pulitzer Prize winning author Elizabeth Strout, Hall of Fame broadcaster and writer Lesley Visser and Old Town native Gary Thorne, the voice of the Baltimore Orioles.
The Boston market is well represented with legends like Bob Ryan and Steve Buckley, Patriots broadcaster Bob Socci, Red Sox voices Dave O’Brien and Tim Neverett and Maine natives Gary Tanguay and Chad Finn.
Voting coincides with the NCAA basketball championship game on April 2 with the Downtown Madness Champion being announced on Tuesday, April 3 on WZON, WKIT-HD3, and DowntownWithRichKimball.com.
