The Downeast Scenic Railroad announces that effective Saturday April 26, 2014 at 8:00 a.m. EDST, the following railroad grade crossings in the Town of Hancock and the City of Ellsworth will see rail traffic again as the Downeast Scenic Railroad begins operating work trains in preparation of its 2014 excursion season.

In the Town of Hancock: Wyman Road and Washington Junction Road. In the City of Ellsworth: Beal Avenue, Main Street, Lincoln Street, Park Street, Birch Street, Davis Street, and the Ellsworth High School crossing.

The railroad will begin operation of excursion trains with scheduled weekend and holiday excursions on Saturday May 24, 2014 with trains departing at 1:30 p.m. through June 21, 2014, with the following exception: On Father’s Day, Sunday June 15, 2014, the Downeast Scenic Railroad will operate trains at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The railroad will begin operating its full schedule of two trains each Saturday and Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. beginning Saturday June 28, 2014 through Sunday October 19, 2014, including the Mondays of Memorial Day, Labor Day and Columbus Day.

It is important to note that no matter what the trains schedule may be, motorist, cyclist and pedestrians should expect a train any time they approach a railroad grade crossing, and reduced speed and caution should be used at all crossings.

Maine law requires all vehicles carrying hazardous materials or buses, occupied or otherwise to stop at all non-exempt railroad crossings, observe the tracks in both directions, and if clear, may then proceed.

Motorcyclists and bicyclists are also reminded that to safely traverse a railroad crossing always cross railroad tracks at a 90-degree angle to the rails.

Additionally, pedestrians may not walk, ride bikes, motorcycles or ATVs within the railroad right of way, it is dangerous and is trespassing under Maine and Federal law.
