Andre Cushing is no stranger to public service. Now he’s helping his community in a new way in honor of his wife Gwen, a breast cancer survivor who was diagnosed in 2010 and her sister, who was diagnosed in 2011. A recent returnee to dancing, (many moons ago in high school he took dance lessons) he saw this event as a chance to combine two things important to him. As his wife is a strong supporter of Komen Maine Affiliate and to fulfill an interest in learning to improve their dancing skills he was happy to agree to participate in this fun and worthwhile event. One of Andre’s philosophies learned from his parents is “You are part of the solution or you are part of the problem.”
In addition, he is dedicating his efforts to “Gerald’s Girls” in honor of his father-in-law, who recently passed away in a tragic accident during a storm in early February. “My father-in-law set a great example for us and many others,” says Andre on his fundraising page, “In light of our family’s loss, I wanted to find a positive way to honor my family and my father-in-law.”
Andre Cushing is from Hampden, he and his wife Gwen have three adult children. He is a Realtor and a home builder. Andre continues a family tradition of civic involvement he believes giving back to your community is important to having a balanced life. He has participated in many civic groups and activities from Jaycees, Kiwanis, Rotary and the EMMC Children’s Miracle Network to Black Bear United Football and the Philip Strickland Home. He also has participated in local government serving as a town councilor and now member of the Maine Legislature, as a state senator for 17 communities in southern Penobscot County.
Fans can support Andre by purchasing tickets to the show and/or voting for him at $1 per vote. You don’t have to wait until the night of the event, however. Dancers are collecting “votes of confidence” prior to the event online.

Due to the annual success of the Race for the Cure and other fundraising efforts like Dancing Like the Stars, the Komen Maine Affiliate has invested over $2.6 million for education, screening and treatment programs and over $780,000 for breast cancer research through the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Grants Program. The community grants program is the backbone of the local affiliate, but their impact reaches far beyond those programs, including breast health education offerings and community organizing.
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Promise: to save lives and end breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.
