BELFAST, Maine — Take a Dance on Henry Road: Belfast Flying Shoes Contradance Series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 4, at American Legion Post 43, 143 Church St., with caller Nils Fredland and music by Henry Road. Sound provided by Eric Weest Johnson.

The band Henry Road will bring their usual flair/energy/pizzaz and their traditional dance tunes to Belfast on April 4: musicians John Pranio and Toki Oshima used to play in Calliope, Ted Sannella’s house band, and they still organize the 4th Friday North Whitefield series. Jamie Oshimathe teen of the group, a regular BFS dancer, and volunteer hall sweeperwill trade his dance shoes for foot percussion and dust mop for guitar/piano/bass. Glen Loper, on mandolin, is a longtime BFS favorite. He’s also on staff at Maine Fiddle Camp! (John is too!)

Trombone player and singer Nils Fredland is one of the busiest and most sought-after callers in the business. He has been calling dances with admirable skill and infectious energy since 2000.

The evening begins at 6:30pm with a community dance led by Chrissy Fowler and music by the All-Comers Band, led by Phyllis Buchanan and Jennifer Armstrong. Fun and simple dances will be taught, and both beginner and experienced dancers are encouraged to brush up on and learn new skills. All musicians are welcome to sit in.

The contra dance begins at 8 p.m. and runs until around 11 p.m.

Admission for the community dance is $2 for adults and $1 for children. For the contras, the price is $10 for adults (i.e., over age 20), $7 for those aged 13 to 20 as well as adult All-Comers, and $4 for children. As always, $1 off admission for every box fan you bring for the windows. For more information, call Chrissy at 338-0979 or visit www.belfastflyingshoes.org.
