Last Thursday evening, Cash Mob Rockland “mobbed” Hello Hello Books . . . the result: “Our best day of business all year.” Said Lacy Simons, delighted owner of the store. The “mob” shopping spree providing this big boost in sales all happened in less than one hour.

Cash Mob Rockland is a recent community initiative organized by a website dedicated to showcasing and promoting locally-owned independent businesses. According to It’s founder, Gordon Orme, “ Cash Mobs have spread across the country in recent months, as an effective and fun way to help concentrate shopping and spending within the local community, versus buying from national chains that siphon dollars out of the local economy and have no vested interest in the communities where they do business. More and more people are realizing the necessity, even the urgency, in supporting our community-based businesses, keeping as many of our dollars re-circulating locally, nurturing our local economy and helping to create worthwhile jobs.”

Many economic studies illustrate this, especially a new one from Civic Economics:

• The study found that the local retailers return an average of 52 percent of their revenue to the local economy, compared with just 14 percent for the chain retailers. Similarly, the local restaurants re-circulate an average of 79 percent of their revenue locally, compared to 30 percent for the chain eateries.
