PORTLAND, Maine, MANCHESTER and PORTSMOUTH, N.H., and BOSTON, Mass. — Baker Newman Noyes, one of New England’s largest accounting and advisory firms, announced Carl Chatto, CPA, was promoted to director of the firm’s audit practice effective Jan. 1.

Chatto, who has been with the firm since its founding in 1995, will oversee the firm’s audit practice across its four offices. In this capacity he will ensure a continued focus on best practices, adherence to internal controls and the highest level of attention to detail for clients.

“Our audit practice has experienced significant growth and development over the past few years, in terms of people, technology and processes. Audit services provide a vital benefit for many companies, and I’m looking forward to both supporting and leading our more than 70 audit professionals as they continue to provide high quality service to our diverse client base,” said Chatto.

Chatto specializes in providing audit and consulting services to a broad spectrum of public and non-public clients. A graduate of Bentley University, he is also actively involved in several professional and community organizations, including the Maine Historical Society as trustee on the Finance and Investment Committee and chair of the Technology Committee. Most recently, he was appointed to the board of the Maine Board of Accountancy, succeeding veteran Peter Chandler, a Baker Newman Noyes tax principal, who held a leadership position for more than 18 years. In addition, Chatto regularly addresses groups such as the Maine Bankers Association and the East Coast Regional Financial Managers Society. Principal Denise Taaffe previously served as director of audit for nine years. Taaffe will continue to serve on the audit practice’s Quality Control Committee and will assume the role of director of audit quality. “Our leadership team is exceptional with an extraordinary commitment to their clients, their work and the firm; Carl, Denise and Peter are no exception,” said Ellie Baker, managing principal. “This is an exciting time for Baker Newman Noyes as we approach our 20th year providing for growth opportunities at all levels.”
