BAR HARBOR—David L. Coffman, D.O., Ph.D. has joined Mount Desert Island Hospital’s Surgery Department and will begin seeing patients on Tuesday, August 2 at Cooper Gilmore Health Center in Bar Harbor. Dr. Coffman is a Board Certified General Surgeon, Trauma Surgeon, and Surgical Critical Care Intensivist. He has more than 20 years of experience in Trauma Surgery/Traumatology, General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Coffman’s medical interests and expertise include all aspects of general surgery, oncologic surgery, traumatology, surgical critical care/ICU medicine, surgical nutrition, and the surgical education of medical students and surgical residents. “My health care philosophy is one that places patients first—no matter what,” said Dr. Coffman. “As a patient advocate, I seek quality, evidence-based medical care while trying my best to be operationally efficient. I truly believe that a healthy community is one that flourishes.”
Before moving to Bar Harbor, Dr. Coffman practiced at Northern Maine Medical Center and the Central Maine Medical Center. He completed his Trauma/Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at Yale University in 2003 and received his Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery from Des Moines University School of Medicine in 1993.
He is a Diplomate of the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery and has been extensively involved in numerous leadership roles at local, state, and national levels. He has had active clinical involvement in surgical and ICU staff education and protocol development for medical, surgical, and intensive care unit programs, research, and publishing. He currently serves as the Surgeon Director for the National Board for the Certification & Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists.
Outside of the operating room, he enjoys music, reading, and writing, and has recently discovered snowshoeing. He has authored one book of fiction and one book of poetry and enjoys collecting books as well. In addition to his surgery credentials, Dr. Coffman holds a Ph.D. in Psychology and greatly enjoys the didactics associated with that.
