PORTLAND, Maine – After two standing-room only nights at Space Gallery in Portland and 14 films featuring complex female protagonists, the Bluestocking Film Series has announced the recipients of the Bluestocking 2014 Audience Choice Awards.

Maura Smith of Massachusetts, won the Bluestocking 2014 Audience Choice Award for female directors for her film,
‘Dear Santa,’ about a girl who asks Santa Claus to turn her into a boy for Christmas.

Alex Kyo Won Lee of New Zealand, won the Bluestocking 2014 Audience Choice Award for male directors for his film, ‘Kimbap,’ about an isolated Korean immigrant and her daughter living in Auckland, New Zealand.

“Congratulations to Maura and Alex for being selected by our audience out of the many impressive films we screened this weekend,” notes Kate Kaminski, founder and artistic director of Bluestocking Film Series. “Interestingly, they both made beautiful films involving the relationship between a mother and a daughter. We look forward to seeing what stories they decide to tell next.”

This was the fourth year of the film series and the first time screening at SPACE Gallery.

“We are absolutely thrilled with the energy surrounding this past weekend,” Kaminski, says. “As part of a bigger movement toward better on-screen representation, these screenings prove audiences are hungry for more movies centered around complex female characters. We’re excited about planning future events that continue to showcase filmmakers and films that do just that.”
