Biddeford Youth Hockey put together a campaign during the holiday season to give back to the members of the community in need. Being a volunteer program, with some of the best volunteers in the sport, they put in multiple hours to help teach local children the great game of hockey and they went above and beyond again.

They put together a food drive to be able to help support our local food pantry. The drive started with an expectation of around 250 nonperishable items to hand off during this holiday season. As the food drive started they quickly realized that 250 items was going to be a significant understatement for this hockey community’s compassion during the 2018/2019 holiday season. They quickly collected over 300 items on their first delivery to the pantry. As the drive grew, they collected well over another 200 items to bring to the Biddeford Food Pantry.

With the great success of the food drive, BYHA decided to put together a coin drive that went on for one weekend before the holiday. In a time of year when money can be short for most, asking for money for the needy might seem like a hurdle. The unbelievable generosity of Biddeford’s hockey community came out again. Just by putting a jar in lobby of the Biddeford Ice Arena we were able to collect another $150 in coins to donate to the local people in need.

So next time you think of “the rough and tumble sport of hockey” please remember this great hockey community and volunteer program known as Biddeford Youth Hockey.
