Sitting alongside the banks of the Higgins Stream, in the Village of Harmony, Maine is a vintage woolen mill, the last of its kind in the United States. Rarely does a business survive generations in the in the same family, but survive over 180 years in continuance operation. Started by Ozias Bartlett in 1821, the actual business stayed in the Bartlett family until the 1940’s and since that time, only a handful of people have had the opportunity to own and run this gem! Today it continues the tradition with the Rice family.
One may ponder what makes Bartlettyarns different and unique from other woolen mills? Bartlettyarns is the last remaining mule spun mill in the USA. Wool is spun on the woolen system to make various knitting yarns, filler and warp for its blankets and yarns for its sweaters. Bartlettyarns spins 240 bobbins at a time. The “mule” replicates the motions of hand spinning, thus giving the yarn a homespun appearance, softer twist and loft. Roving is also produced for hand spinning, wet and dry felting.
Today, the business is run very similar to how it started. Wool is sourced from local farmers along the east coast by direct purchase for the wholesale and retail portions of its business. The custom processing aspect “exchanges wool for wool yarns or the other Bartlettyarn signature products” for a processing fee. In many cases, the farmers bring their own wool and the processing is done so that they receive their very own fiber in return either in our specifications or to their specifications.
Steeped in tradition and known worldwide, the film “Graveyard Shift” was filmed at Bartlettyarns and its yarns are currently used in sweaters that are shipped to Japan!
