BANGOR, Maine — Members of the Bangor Region Leadership Institute (BRLI) Class of 2013 will be competing in an “amazing race” across downtown Bangor from 2 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 4. The race is part of BRLI’s curriculum and takes participants to nine different businesses and organizations across downtown Bangor, competing in different group challenges and tasks.

BRLI is an intensive, regionally-oriented leadership development program of the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce. Twenty-four participants from a variety of industries are part of this year’s class, which is the 15th since the program began in 1998.

The Amazing Race is an integral part of the curriculum, says John Canders, BRLI Steering Committee chairman, in a press release. “It does two very important things. One, it exposes the class to the downtown district, a major component of the Bangor economy, and the wide variety of businesses and opportunities that are there. And two, the race fosters great leadership, team-building and communication skills.”

Teams will start from the top of the Bangor parking garage and disperse to different downtown businesses. Participants will complete challenges, ranging in difficulty level, to earn points. The team with the most points at the end of the race wins. Bonus points are given to the first three teams to arrive.

Participating businesses and organizations are: Penobscot Theatre, Bangor Public Library, Bangor Police Department, Maine Discovery Museum, Paddy Murphy’s, Central Street Farmhouse, Hammond Street Senior Center, and Giacomos. The finish line will be at the Sea Dog, where all teams will compete in a final challenge.
