BANGOR – On March 21st, the Bangor Area Breakfast Rotary hosted its 8th annual All That Jazz concert at Bangor High School’s Peakes Auditorium. Four area music groups –Bangor H.S. Jazz Band, Old Town H.S. Concert Band, Orono Jazz Ensemble, and Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestras – entertained a crowd of several hundred concert-goers. Each band received $1,000 for performing and the Old Town H.S. Concert Band was voted “best of the evening” and earned an additional $2,000. Steve McKay of WLBZ NEWS CENTER 2 hosted the event.

On March 25th, Bruce Roscher, All That Jazz chair, and Stephen Andrew, club president, presented Literacy Volunteers of Bangor with a check for $6,500, the ticket proceeds from the event. Literacy Volunteers strengthens the community by providing free English language tutoring to Bangor area adults. “Our Rotary Club’s mission is to help area children in need. Assisting parents with reading skills strengthens the family unit, thereby benefiting the children of our community. We hope this contribution will go a long way in increasing literacy in the Bangor area,” says Roscher.

Support from this Rotary club has enabled Literacy Volunteers to professionally produce two television public service announcements and air them on local stations. Its purpose is to recruit more adults with low literacy and volunteers to their program. With 20% of adults in our community struggling with the written word, many more people need this assistance. According to Mary Marin Lyon, executive director, the tutor training class for spring has more than tripled and calls from adult potential students have increased.

Literacy Volunteers of Bangor helps roughly 250 adults each year and operates entirely on private support. Last fall, United Way of Eastern Maine presented Literacy Volunteers with its Agency of Distinction Award.
