The Southern Maine Labor Council and the University of Southern Maine Department of Economics present “The Hostess Debacle” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in USM’s Wishcamper Center, Room 133.

Join us as we explore the forces behind the closure of the Hostess Bakery in Biddeford and learn more about why workers struck the company in spite of dire warnings about the plant’s possible closure if they did.

Mike Hummell, a 14-year Hostess Brand worker from Lenexa, Kansas will be the keynote speaker.  Hummell has become well known for explaining, in clear and concise terms, why the union struck and how its owners planned to break the company up when they bought it. He has written dozens of articles, produced videos on their struggle and has been interviewed by several national media outlets.

Joining Hummell on the panel will be John Jordan, Business Manager for Bakers Union 334 along with Joe Piccone, Business Agent for Teamsters Local 340, the union representing the delivery drivers at Hostess. Rounding out the panel will be Biddeford City Councilor Richard Rhames, addressing both the impact the closing is having on Biddeford and the various tax breaks provided by the city to Hostess.
