MOUNT DESERT ISLAND – Award-winning children’s author/illustrator Chris Van Dusen is visiting Mount Desert Island this Saturday, Dec. 1, with his new book, “If I Built A House,” the much-anticipated follow-up to the E.B. White Award-winning “If I Built a Car.” Mr. Van Dusen is also the author of the Lupine Award-winning “The Circus Ship,” based on a real shipwreck off the coast of Maine.
This Saturday he’ll be at the Pemetic Elementary School in Southwest Harbor at 10 a.m. for a program open to everyone. Then, in the afternoon, he’ll head to the Northeast Harbor Library where he’ll be in the Mellon Room beginning at 1:30 p.m. to talk about writing, sign books and answer questions from one and all.
Books will be available for purchase at both events. Proceeds will benefit the programs of Island Readers & Writers (IRW), an MDI-based nonprofit that brings authors to Maine islands and sponsors literacy programs in Hancock and Washington counties.
“I’m a big fan of IRW,” said Mr. Van Dusen. “They do great work and I’m excited to come back to MDI.”
Mr. Van Dusen — born in Portland and now living in Camden — is the author and illustrator of seven books, and illustrator of the popular Mercy Watson series by Kate DiCamillo.
“Chris’s new book is great fun and we are so excited to bring him to MDI,” said Jan Coates, executive director of IRW. Ms. Coates formerly owned Port In A Storm Bookstore in Somesville.
Mr. Van Dusen is in the midst of a series of trips to Maine islands sponsored by IRW, meeting with members of the public and working with school children.
