Art Space Gallery invites you an opening reception on Friday evening, August 1. Four of the nineteen venerable artists at Art Space exhibit new works that are showcased in the gallery’s front room.

Via the fish ladder at Damariscotta Mills, Damariscotta Lake has witnessed the return of alewives. Photographer Joan Wright’s subject matter is primarily water, but this year the ritual call to return to the place of birth to produce new life has inspired Wright to feature the life in the water in much of her compositionally strong, abstract-leaning photographs.

If abstract paintings pique your interests, you don’t want to miss the non-representational explosions of color in Jill Caldwell’s powerful recent works. Balancing between the boldness of colorful shapes and the subtlety of multiple layers, Caldwell’s graphite, cray-pas, and ink infused acrylics spring more from the emotional rather than the physical.

Most of us have an affinity for the violin. Its grace and beauty in both sound and form has inspired Sandra Leinonen Dunn to add this beloved instrument to her substantial repertoire of still life paintings. Like a musical composition, each painting expresses a subtle nuance that will be uniquely personal to each admirer. A variety of sizes are exhibited.

New Art Space member Roger Barry’s wood sculptures begin as a question, a sensory interaction to discover what lies within. Appreciators will want to interact with the pieces, whether they are intricately sculpted boxes, figures, or wall hangings. Many of Barry’s reliquaries incorporate hidden mechanisms that enhance interaction with the works.
The range of styles and the quality of the artwork by Maine based artists bring return customers time and again to Art Space Gallery. Join these art appreciators between 5 and 8 pm on Friday August 1, and share a glass of wine with many of the artists. Art Space Gallery is located at 342 Main Street in Rockland, directly across the street from the Strand Theater. Summer hours are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays 11 a. m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
