Fort Kent ~The Edgar J. (Guy) Paradis Cancer Fund is the beneficiary, again this year, of a major contribution to assist the families of patients dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Cindy Daigle, Northern Maine Medical Center’s (NMMC) Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer for the Paradis Fund, was on hand May 10th to accept a $6,500 donation made by the Long Lake Fishing Derby Committee. To date, this year’s donation brings the Derby’s total contributions to $57,500.

Now in its twelfth year, the Derby is Northern Maine’s largest ice fishing event and offers the largest cash prize for this type of event in the state of Maine. With base camp at the Long Lake Sporting Club, the Derby includes ten bodies of water along the Fish River chain. The number of registrations topped last year’s nine hundred registrations by an added 143 anglers. Bernier said, “It’s all about supporting the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund. That’s what makes this event so great.” He indicated that some people register for the event for the sole purpose of making a donation.
In the most recent fiscal year, the Paradis Fund is on record for a total of $88,000 of aid paid to forty local families. Cindy Daigle said, “As a result of the continued generosity of individuals and organizations like the Derby, we have been able to continue to provide financial assistance and ease the burden on local families who must travel outside of the Valley for cancer treatment.” Daigle reported that as of March 31, the Fund has provided one million dollars in aid to local individuals qualifying for assistance.
