As members of the Class of 2014 across the state of Maine prepare to take the SAT this Saturday, May 4th, Leslie Trundy, school counselor at Morse High School and chair for the ACT Maine state council wants to remind families of the ACT registration deadline on Friday, May 3rd. “Deadlines are a big part of the college admission process and when families pay attention to them it keeps the costs of applying to college down. For college bound juniors, taking the ACT this June 8th will allow them to enter their senior fall with the standardized admission tests they may need to apply to college. For the Class of 2012 across the state of Maine 1,470 graduates or nine percent took the ACT. Leslie Trundy would like to see that number increase.

Because of the state initiative, much of the attention in Maine is placed on the SAT but for a percentage of students, the ACT may be a better representation of their college readiness. Trundy shares, “Within my own research at Morse, I find a third of the time students score higher with the ACT, a third score higher with the SAT and a third score equally. Because the ACT is an achievement test with questions developed from the curriculum they have learned in high school, for some students it can be a better indicator of their college readiness and abilities.” Although both tests are widely accepted as a college entrance exam, there are distinct differences which are useful for families to know. The ACT offers students the option to take or not a plus writing section. It has a science section and does not penalize a student’s score for wrong answers.

Qualifying families can receive a fee waiver to take the test through their guidance office. Registration is done on-line through www.actstudent.org.
