Portland, Maine continues to admire Portland’s oldest living resident who is well over a century old.

George Bales’ 100th birthday was over five years ago. Now, he’s 105.

“It’s a distinguished privilege to have a special father well past the age of 100”, said George’s 61 year old son Christopher Bales.

George was married to a wife for 68 years, until her death in 2007, at the age of 90.

“Christine was my life”, said George during a conversation with Chris yesterday. “But all marriages have to come to an unbearable halt at some point”.

Christine Ruth Stone who always had kept her maiden name, had married George in 1939, right before World War 2 broke out in September. She died nearly six years ago in 2007 just a few days after she turned 90.

“We got engaged on Christmas Eve 1938, and we married six months later in June 1939″, George said. We traveled the most to foreign countries in the 1970’s”.

George attributes part of his robust memory to traveling with his wife and learning different cultures in different places.

“You are never too old too learn”. George’s words of wisdom are essential to his family, friends, and the women who care for him.

RIP Christine Ruth Stone, April 28, 1917-May 5, 2007.
