The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Machias at the University of Maine at Machias, in the Reynolds Gym, will be happening soon! On Friday April 19, 2013 the 5th annual Relay will begin at 6pm with Opening Ceremonies. The Relay will be kicked off by cancer survivors participating in a Survivor Lap to celebrate them. They are then followed by Caregivers, to honor those who have helped loved ones throughout their cancer journey. We encourage all area survivors and caregivers to join us for these special laps. There is no fee to join in the laps, we just ask that you register when you arrive at the Relay. Survivors and Caregivers will have group pictures taken before the Relay begins, so please try to be present and registered by 5:30 pm to ensure you are in the picture. Survivors will receive a purple Survivor t-shirt and can pre-register at the Relay for Life of Machias website (web address below).
At 8pm there will be a Luminaria Ceremony. The public is encouraged to attend this very moving ceremony. The Luminaria Ceremony is a time to remember people we have lost to cancer, to support people who currently have cancer, and to honor people who have fought cancer in the past. The power of this ceremony lies in providing an opportunity for people to work through grief and find hope. As lights are turned off, the paper bag luminaries line the track and light the room with the light of loss and hope. If you would like to purchase a luminary to honor someone, see anyone who is participating in Relay, email us, or they can be purchased on the Relay website. Another part of the Luminaria Ceremony is the Tribute Video. It is comprised of pictures of those lost to cancer and of survivors, and set to music. It is a very touching way to honor loved ones who have been affected by cancer. If you would like to honor a loved one lost or a survivor, you can submit a picture of them with a sentiment that you would like on the picture. There is no fee to submit a picture. If you would like to submit a picture, please email or call for details (contact info below). All submissions have to be in by April 15.
At 7pm the “Darling’s Ice Cream For A Cause” truck will roll into Relay. Sponsored by Darling’s Auto Group, this ice cream truck will be outside of the Reynolds Gym serving up ice cream to Relayers and the public for two hours. Ice creams are free, but a donation would be greatly appreciated. All proceeds that is taken in from donations for the ice cream is donated the Machias Relay. We encourage the public to enjoy an ice cream and donate a bit for a great cause!
We also encourage the public to come into the Relay and check out the many teams that work so hard to raise money for a great cause. Teams decorate their campsites and also have on-site fundraisers, including great raffles and food sales. Be sure to come in and check it out!
Closing Ceremony will begin at 8am on Saturday, April 20. At the ceremony, various awards are presented, and total fundraising amounts are announced. This ceremony is a joyous celebration of all the hard work put in by all Relayers. The public is encouraged to attend.
