Cheap lobster for celebration
PORT CLYDE — Port Clyde will take part in fall’s lobster harvest by selling lobsters at $5 per live lobster or $6 per cooked lobster noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Port Clyde Fishermens Dock, Co-op Road.
Fall is the time of year when Maine lobsters are most abundant, and the majority of the annual catch is harvested. This fall communities are coming together to celebrate the harvest and to show appreciation for local lobstermen.
Dubbed “Maine Lobster Harvest Days,” the events offer live and cooked lobster for one low price, often with entertainment and other treats to put customers in a celebratory mood.
“Fall is the best time of year to enjoy Maine lobster,” said Dane Somers, executive director of the Maine Lobster Promotion Council. “They are at their peak of flavor, fullness and abundance.”
Maine harvesters will bring in more than 12 million pounds of lobster in October alone.
A portion of proceeds from each of the events will be donated to charities supported by Maine lobstering communities.

Business After Hours
WINTERPORT — The Winterport Business Association will hold its next Business After Hours 5-7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at My Thrill Studio, 46 Blueberry Hill Road. The open house will honor the third year that My Thrill Studio has been located on Blueberry Hill. Attendees will have the opportunity to view the studio and hear and see samples of projects recorded at the studio, talk to owner-sound engineer Mark Francis and possibly win an hour of recording time. In addition, local author Howard Olsen will be on hand to speak about their three published books and his recently recorded versions.
The Gilpin Railroad Incident band’s newly released CD will be available for purchase. The band is based in the Bangor area. Lobster chef finalists
The title of Maine Lobster Chef of the Year is up for grabs, and this year the public holds the power to determine the winner. Many chefs entered their recipes for fall harvest-themed lobster dishes in hopes of being selected to compete in a cook-off competition on Oct. 23. One Rockport chef is in the top three.
A panel of judges reviewed the submissions and three finalists for the Maine Lobster Chef of the Year 2009 competition were announced:
– Rick Skoglund, chef at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, with his recipe for butternut-mascarpone lobster ravioli with balsamic pomegranate spinach salad.
– Melissa Bouchard, chef at Dimillo’s Floating Restaurant in Portland, with her recipe for maple butter poached lobster tail with sweet potato and fuji apple bisque and frizzles of green onion.
– Mackenzie Arrington, a Maine student studying at the Culinary Institute of America, with his recipe for roasted lobster tail on braised cabbage and cornbread.
In a new twist on the annual competition, the public will determine the 2009 Maine Lobster Chef of the Year.
For the first time, the cook-off competition is open to the public as a part of the Harvest on the Harbor celebration in Portland put on by the Greater Portland Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. The audience will get a first-hand demonstration of each dish from the chef who created it. After tasting a sample of each dish, the audience will vote.
In addition to the three lobster dishes, the audience will sample lobster bisque provided by Hancock Gourmet and wine pairings from Maine’s Cellardoor Winery and Vineyard in Lincolnville.
A portion of proceeds from the event will go to benefit students in the culinary arts program at Southern Maine Community College.
Maine Gov. John Baldacci proclaimed the week of Oct. 19 “Harvest on the Harbor Week” to promote Maine as a culinary destination.
The Maine Lobster Chef of the Year cook-off event will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at the Ocean Gateway Building on Commercial Street in Portland.

Workshop for nonprofits

BELFAST — The University of Maine’s Certificate in Nonprofit Organization Management will offer the next workshop in the series 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9. The topic for the session is “The Effective Use of Volunteers in the Nonprofit Organization.”
Volunteers are often the lifeblood of the nonprofit organization, allowing it to fulfill its mission with limited expenditures for paid staff.
Every aspect of volunteer management will be examined, including volunteer identification, preparation, retention, evaluation and recognition. The blending of paid staff and volunteers will be addressed.
The workshop instructor is Dr. Frank Burtnett, a veteran educator and nonprofit organization executive. Burtnett has 30 years of direct service in various nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and community agencies, including seven years as executive director of the National Association for College Admission Counseling.
Burtnett is the president of an independent consulting firm specializing in programs that foster human resource and organization development.
The University of Maine is offering this series of workshops at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast leading to a certificate in Nonprofit Organizational Management for nonprofit organization executives, staff members and leaders to deal with contemporary issues and problems using realistic strategies.
The cost for each one-day workshop is $150, which includes a continental breakfast, lunch and workshop materials. The cost of the two-day grant-writing workshop is $255.
Participants can earn a Certificate in Nonprofit Management by completing the courses in six different sessions.
