4R Animal Shelter of Lee, Maine, sponsored a Summer Horse Camp for children using rescue horses to teaching children to care for the horses and themselves. The week long camp included lessons in brushing, feeding and riding skills. The children took time to wash horses and learn about feed needs. Each day the children participated in riding lessons, trail rides and also wrote notes to each camper to put in their “Me Bags”. Me Bags are paper sacks decorated by each child and then filled with positive comments from all the other group members each day. After the camp is over, the children take the Me Bags home and can then read what was written. Along with horse time, the children took a field trip to the Army National Guard in Bangor and were able to sit in a Black Hawk Helicopter. After lunch the children and adults traveled to Gass Horse Supply in Orono to browse and purchase gifts. Saturday, August 10, the children will ride in a program to show their parents what they have learned through the week. 4R Animal Shelter sponsored this camp under their mission statement of providing educational opportunities to prevent animal mishandling. The Joel House Scholarship Fund of Lee, Maine also helped by providing a partial scholarship for one child to attend. The children attending the horse camp enjoyed the week and learned how caring for horses reflects caring for themselves.
