Seven comfort food dishes in the Bangor area to warm your soul

By Emily Burnham, BDN Staff

It’s snowing or raining or chilly out. Maybe you’ve had a long, stressful day and just want to eat something that feels warm and cozy. Or, maybe you’ve just got a craving.

Regardless, sometimes, you just want comfort food. Something to fill your belly in a happy way and maybe inspire a nice nap afterward. Here are seven great comfort food dishes at seven great places to eat in the Bangor area.

Dysart’s, 530 Coldbrook Road, Hermon; 1110 Broadway, Bangor

You thought we were gonna say Dysart’s Chicken Pot Pie with its famous buttery, flaky crust, didn’t you? Well, think again! We do love that iconic dish, but for our money, the best comfort food at Dysart’s is the Hot Thanksgiving Sandwich. Turkey and stuffing served on homemade bread and smothered in gravy and cranberry sauce. On a cold, wet day, it’s the culinary equivalent of a hug from Grandma.

Humble Comfort, 518 South Main St., Brewer

Comfort is in the name at this cozy little Brewer eatery, which since 2014 has quietly been serving up some of the best food on either side of the river. Our pick here isn’t an entree; it’s an appetizer that you may want to keep for yourself, not share. The BBQ Chicken Nachos at Humble are fantastic: housemade potato chips, topped with shredded barbecued chicken and cheddar cheese and served with a side of sour cream. Super simple; super delicious.

Chase’s Family Restaurant, 1575 Hammond St., Bangor

Chase’s on Outer Hammond in Bangor is a hidden gem, a super-friendly, family-run restaurant with high-quality food. Chef Steve Chase makes darn tasty steaks, seafood and burgers, but he’s really got a flair for Italian-American comfort classics. All the pasta dishes are good, but for a true homestyle favorites the Chicken Parmesan can’t be beat. Breaded, fried chicken breast, topped with mozzarella and housemade marinara sauce, served on linguini.

Angler’s, 91 Coldbrook Road, Hampden

There are seafood places for tourists and then there are seafood places for locals. Angler’s is the latter, a no-nonsense place to sate your craving for fried anything. There are lots of places around town that serve fish and chips, but for the classic approach, Angler’s Fried Haddock Dinner has got it all. Super crispy, super fresh, with Maine-caught haddock. Angler’s has locations in Searsport and Newport, too.

Nicky’s Cruisin’ Diner, 957 Union St., Bangor

Is there a dish more synonymous with comfort food than meatloaf? That depends on your definition of comfort food, but it still has to be up there. For our money, the best bet for classic, just-like-mom-used-to-make meatloaf is the Homestyle Meatloaf at Nicky’s Cruisin’ Diner on Union Street. Served with potatoes and veggies.

Hero’s Sports Grill, 41 Washington St., Bangor

You can tell a lot about a person by how they prefer their mac and cheese. There are tons of different approaches to the classic American dish, but for something that’s crowd-pleasing as well as ridiculously tasty, we’re going to have to go with the Buffalo Mac and Cheese at Hero’s. Their super-creamy mac and cheese is topped with boneless, mildly spicy buffalo wings. It is really, really hard to stop eating it once you’ve started. You have been warned.

MELT Food Truck, Bangor Waterfront, May-October

There are tons of grilled cheese sandwiches available around town, but only one place specializes in gooey, melty sandwiches like this, and that’s the MELT food truck, which parks on the Bangor Waterfront starting the first week of May. There are lots of different grilled cheeses on the menu there, but the Party (In Your Mouth) Melt, which features two cheeses, a hamburger patty, caramelized onions and a tangy sauce on crispy grilled bread, is always available and always a decadent treat.
