Driver’s 11-year-old daughter killed in Cathance crash

An 11-year-old girl died Thursday when her father drove off the road in Cathance Township and hit a tree, police said.

Christopher Stevenson, of Roque Bluffs, was driving a 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis south on Route 191 Thursday night when he left the road and hit a tree, according to Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Michael Crabtree.

His 11-year-old daughter was a passenger in the car, and died in the collision, he said. Police did not release her name.

Stevenson, 45, was issued a summons for operating after suspension, and could face further charges, Crabtree said.

Crabtree did not know where the girl was sitting inside the car. Because the crash in still under investigation, he could not say what caused Stevenson to go off the road.

Sheriff’s deputies, Maine State Police, and local fire departments responded to the crash at 11:15 p.m.

Cathance Township is an unorganized territory in Washington County, just north of East Machias.
