Soccer stars from Bangor, Camden Hills earn All-America honors

By Ernie Clark, BDN Staff

Bangor High School senior Garth Berenyi and Camden Hills of Rockport sophomore Kristina Kelly were among the top award winners at the annual Maine Soccer Coaches Banquet held Sunday at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor.

Berenyi and Kelly were two of the state’s four All-America selections, along with Luke Groothoff and Sara D’Appolonia, both of Yarmouth.

Berenyi scored 32 goals to lead Bangor to a 15-1-1 record and a berth in the Class A North championship match. He finished his high school career with a school-record 57 goals.

Kelly scored 39 goals this fall as Camden Hills went 17-0-1 and captured its second straight Class A state championship. Just two years into her high school career, the explosive striker already has scored a school-record 71 goals.

Groothoff, a senior midfielder, led the Yarmouth boys team to its fourth consecutive Class B state championship while Appolonia, a senior forward, helped the Clippers’ girls squad to a second straight state title.

This marked the first year Maine has been awarded multiple boys and girls All-America awards other than for previous ties in the voting. The number of All-America and All-Region 1 (New England) representatives each state has in a given year is based on the number of head coaches who are members of the national coaches association for the sport, formerly known as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and now known as United Soccer Coaches.

Eight boys and nine girls earned All-Region 1 status from Maine this year.

Berenyi and Groothoff head up the boys All-Region 1 representatives, joined by senior back Michael Wildes of Winslow, sophomore forward Bilal Hersi of Class A state champion Lewiston, senior forwards Kyle King of Gorham and Michael Arrants of Falmouth, senior midfielder Charlie Cronin of South Portland and junior forward Eric LaBrie of Yarmouth.

Joining Kelly and Appolonia among Maine’s All-Region 1 girls contingent are Kelly’s Camden Hills teammate Kassie Krul, a junior midfielder; senior midfielders Kolleen Bouchard of Class C state champion Houlton and Alex Allain of Hermon, junior forward Madison Michaud of Presque Isle, sophomore midfielder Eliza Jansujwicz of Bangor, junior midfielder Arika Elias of Waterville and senior forward Gaby Paganakos of Scarborough.

Named the state’s boys soccer coaches of the year were Mike McGraw of Lewiston (North) and Rocco Frenzelli of Portland (South), while girls soccer coaches of the year were Tim Tweedie of Houlton (North) and Mike Farley of Scarborough (South).

Nominated for United Soccer Coaches Region 1 boys coach of the year from Maine were McGraw (large-school division), Don Beckwith of Class C state champion Maranacook of Readfield (small schools) and Aaron Wilcox of Class D state champion Bangor Christian (private schools).

Nominated for USC Region 1 girls coach of the year were Meredith Messer of Camden Hills (large schools) and Tweedie (small schools).
