PORTLAND, Maine — Police are searching for a person suspected of robbing a local bank.
The Key Bank in the North Gate Shopping Center at 85 Auburn Street was robbed around 2 p.m. and police were pursuing a suspect Friday evening, a police spokesman said. The suspect is still currently at large.
The suspect, described as a white male wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, a wig with long black hair and sunglasses, was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun. He entered the bank and threatened employees and customers while demanding cash. Witnesses described him as being thin with a deep voice. No one was injured.
Lt. Robert Martin from the Portland Police Department stated in a press release that the suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash and ran toward the rear of the shopping center where the bank is located, onto Brook Road, which is where he was last seen.
Police closed down portions of Ocean Avenue and Presumpscot Street in Portland and Middle Road in Falmouth for hours, while they conducted a search of the area. Nearby residents were asked to stay in their homes at that time.
The Portland Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigations are working together on the investigation; the PPD asks that people call 207-874-8575 with information.
