LEWISTON, Maine — A man was arrested Monday night after he allegedly stole a gun from a Lewiston residence and caused a more than 6-hour standoff with police.

Scott Estes, 37, was charged with theft by unauthorized taking, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and probation revocation.

Lewiston police received about 11 a.m. Monday reports of a stolen firearm from a residence. The suspect in the theft, Estes, was seen entering an apartment building at 287 Bates St.

Police evacuated apartment units near the one Estes was inside, and placed two nearby schools on lockdown. Once they knew Estes wasn’t on the loose, they released students.

Maine State Police troopers and crisis negotiation team joined Lewiston police and eventually took Estes into custody and acquired the stolen firearm around 6:20 p.m.

Estes will be held in the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and more charges could be filed.
