A Portland cafe was badly damaged early Sunday morning when two cars crashed at a Brighton Street intersection, sending one vehicle careening out of control into the business.

The crash happened about 1:45 a.m., when a driver heading inbound on Brighton Avenue and a driver traveling on Stevens Avenue toward Congress Street collided in front of the Crooked Mile Cafe, according to police.

“It sent one car out of control into the Crooked Mile,” Lt. Robert Doherty of the Portland Police Department said early Sunday afternoon.

One of the drivers was injured and was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland for treatment, he said.

Central Maine Power shut off electricity to the building after the crash.

Alcohol appears to have been a factor in the crash, according to police.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash, and expect to file charges in the incident, Doherty said, adding that the drivers’ names should be released Monday.
