A fire on Whitehead Island destroyed a small support building but spared the island’s lighthouse and keeper’s house Tuesday night.

Whitehead Island is located south of Spruce Head Island. Fire crews from St. George and South Thomaston responded to the island blaze shortly after 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to reports from Village Soup.

In an email Wednesday morning, Whitehead Island manager Gigi Lirot said the fire destroyed the island’s septic processing building and some of the wooded area behind the building.

Whitehead Island and its facilities are used for adult enrichment programs through the Pine Island Camp, which is the parent organization of the Whitehead Light Station, according to the organization’s website.
