Lebanon man dies during standoff with police

By Nick McCrea, BDN Staff

A Lebanon man died inside his mobile home during a standoff with state police Monday night, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland.

Police were called Monday afternoon to a mobile home on the Lower Barley Road, where Wayne Castellez, 59, had allegedly fired several shots from inside his home, McCausland said.

Castellez’s wife, who was home at the time, escaped uninjured.

The Maine State Police tactical team was called in, but officers didn’t enter the home until about 9:30 p.m. at which time they discovered Castellez’s body, McCausland said.

McCausland said that police believe he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
