A 5-year-old Belfast girl died Monday night after she was shot inside her grandparents’ home in Scarborough.
Elise Dorr died shortly after arriving at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland said in a statement Tuesday morning.
Local police were called to a Milliken Street home around 7:30 p.m. Monday. Police continue to investigate how the shooting happened, and haven’t yet released any details about how the girl was shot.
Scarborough police Chief Robbie Moulton said in a statement Tuesday that there was no danger to the public, calling the undisclosed events of Monday night “a tragedy.”
“There is an extended family in our community who woke up this morning feeling the loss of their little girl. Their lives will be forever changed. There are police officers, firefighters, EMTs, and dispatchers who tried their hardest in vain last night and woke up this morning wanting to hug their children and families tight and not let go,” Moulton wrote. “I ask that you keep all of these people in your hearts over the next few days as they try to begin to heal.”
The girl was staying at the grandparents’ home with two older siblings and her parents, Todd and Virginia Dorr of Belfast, while the grandparents were away. Both parents were home when the shooting happened and have been interviewed by police, McCausland said.
Police stayed at the home into the early morning hours collecting evidence and interviewing people who were at the home at the time.
