A father drowned Wednesday night while kayaking on Indian Lake in Whiting, according to the Maine Wardens Service.
Allen Devericks, 48, was paddling with his daughter on the lake when the kayak overturned. Rescuers were called around 8 p.m. after a man at a camp on the shore heard cries for help. That man took out his canoe to attempt a rescue, but he ended up tipping his canoe as well.
First responders found Devericks, but weren’t able to revive him. His daughter was pulled from the water safely. Both he and his daughter had life jackets in the kayak, but weren’t wearing them when it capsized, according to wardens.
The Maine Warden Service, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Whiting and East Machias fire departments are all involved in the rescue.
