L.L. Bean is opening a new manufacturing center in Lewiston the company says will initially employ more than 100.

The center is double the size of Lewiston’s current L.L. Bean manufacturing center, and company spokespeople said the staff will grow by about 140 people over the next year.

Lewiston’s center will be one of two hubs in Maine for producing the popular bean boot. The other factory is in Brunswick.

Spokespeople say the company sold more than 600,000 boots last year, and this year they project to go as high as 700,000.

The opening ceremony took place at 8 a.m. Thursday, and Senator Susan Collins was in attendance as well.
