ALTON, Maine — An 18-month-old boy was killed Friday afternoon when he was struck by a car in the parking lot of Alton Elementary School, Maine State Police confirmed Friday night.

The boy, Drake Sechrest of Howland, was in the parking lot with his mother, 25-year-old Caitlin Carroll, and eight others watching family members use a go-kart when the incident occurred, according to a Saturday morning press release from Maine Public Information Officer Stephen McCausland.

The truck was driven by George Madore, 49, of Old Town. Madore, a janitor at the school, knew the boy’s family and spoke to some of them before getting in his truck. According to McCausland, Sechrest had wandered away from his family and Madore had driven less than 10 feet when one of his tires ran over the boy.

At the time of the incident, Trooper Steve Morrell said that the accident occurred about 4:20 p.m.

There were a number of people in the parking lot at the time, Morrell said.

State police were assisted by the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office and the Alton Fire Department. A representative from the Penobscot County District Attorney’s Office also was at the accident scene, he said.
