BANGOR, Maine — Bangor’s Big Lots store will close its doors after this holiday season, a company official said Thursday.

The retailer will close its store located off Stillwater Ave. on Jan. 15, 2015.

No other information was released by a spokeswoman at the company’s national headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.

The discount retailer opened its Bangor location in 2009, making it the seventh in the state at the time. The retailer operates more than 1,400 stores nationwide.

Big Lots took over a space that had been occupied by Linens ‘n Things, which closed earlier that year after its parent company went bankrupt.

Big Lots expanded rapidly in 2009, opening 45 stores across the nation by the time they opened in Bangor. In 2011, the company bought nearly 80 stores in Canada. The retailer began experiencing harder times a few years later.

In late 2013, the company shut down its Canadian operations in response to lagging sales.
